Sanjay Manjrekar Slams Selectors Over Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s ODI Omission

The upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled to begin on June 14, has already generated significant headlines before a single ball has been bowled. The announcement of the squad by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has triggered intense debate across the cricketing fraternity. Among the most vocal critics is former Indian batter and respected commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, who has launched a scathing attack on the selectors and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Manjrekar’s primary grievance centers around the exclusion of young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal, asserting that the selection panel owes the rising star an apology for dropping him in favor of older veterans.

The Squad Selection Controversy and Key Exclusions

The squad selected for the Afghanistan series is filled with unexpected changes, raising eyebrows among analysts and fans alike. While the selection of some players was expected, the omission of key youngsters has raised serious questions about India’s long-term vision. Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant have both been dropped from the ODI squad, alongside all-rounder Axar Patel. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan has earned a recall to the side.

The bowling department also sees a massive overhaul. Premier spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami have been rested due to ongoing injuries. Meanwhile, captain Rohit Sharma and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya have retained their spots, albeit with asterisks placed over their current fitness levels. In a bid to test bench strength, the selectors have handed maiden call-ups to seamers Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar, alongside left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. While the rest of the squad aligns with expectations, the top-order selections have become the main talking point.

Why Manjrekar Demands an Apology for Jaiswal and Sudharsan

Speaking on Sportstar, Sanjay Manjrekar did not hold back his frustration regarding the treatment of India’s youngest prospects. He argued that the selectors have treated players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan unfairly by prioritizing veterans whose current form and fitness are under scrutiny. Manjrekar pointed out the sheer injustice of dropping young players who have delivered outstanding performances in their limited opportunities.

“Sai Sudharsan has got a couple of 50s in the last set of innings playing at the top of the order for India in ODIs. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s last ODI innings was a 116 not out, and these guys are not playing for India,” Manjrekar observed, highlighting the illogical nature of the current selection policy.

The Compromise on Rohit Sharma’s Fitness and Form

A central theme of Manjrekar’s criticism is the selection of Rohit Sharma over in-form youngsters. According to the former cricketer, Rohit’s lack of peak fitness is forcing the BCCI to make unnecessary compromises that disrupt the team’s natural progression.

“The selectors have gone with a veteran whose fitness is a question mark, and he is clearly out of form. Explain that to me, what is the logic behind that, what is the vision?” Manjrekar questioned. He emphasized that if political or administrative pressures forced the selectors to include Rohit Sharma, they owed Jaiswal a direct explanation and an apology.

“If they were compelled, and had to make a compromise and pick Rohit Sharma for whatever reason, the first thing they have got to do is pick up the phone and apologise to Jaiswal, because this is a young player who has done tremendous things at the toughest level, he is in his prime with a bright future ahead,” he added.

A Vision for the Future of Indian Cricket

Manjrekar firmly believes that the future of Indian cricket lies in transitioning to a younger top order. He argued that a top three consisting of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is “tailor-made” for India’s ODI future. Instead of backing this young trio, the selectors have chosen to rely on older stars, a decision Manjrekar finds hard to justify. While he conceded that there might be a case for retaining Virat Kohli, he remained steadfast that the reliance on aging superstars is holding back world-class talent.

“You have a tailor-made top three in Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jaiswal, and you are not backing them, and going towards Rohit Sharma. At least with Virat Kohli, there is some case,” Manjrekar elaborated. He further stated that India has an abundance of young talent capable of matching the legendary outputs of Kohli and Rohit if given a consistent run.

“It cannot be that the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, believes that this is the right way forward for Indian cricket. I cannot imagine him thinking this is the right way forward. If you are going to focus so much on Rohit and Virat that you are going to ignore all the others, there comes a time when you look at the way forward for Indian cricket. All of these batters like Gill, Kishan, Sudharsan, and Gaikwad are class. Give them 10 innings, they will give you the same numbers that Virat and Rohit have,” Manjrekar stated.

Analyzing Jaiswal’s Promising ODI Track Record

Despite his incredible talent, Yashasvi Jaiswal has had to wait a surprisingly long time to make his mark in the 50-over format. Due to an overcrowded Indian top order, Jaiswal had to wait until 2025 to make his ODI debut, despite being a regular fixture in Tests and T20Is for nearly two years prior.

In his brief ODI career so far, Jaiswal has played only 4 matches but has already showcased his immense potential. He has amassed 171 runs at an incredible batting average of 57.00 and a strike rate of 86.00. This includes his stunning, unbeaten 116* in his most recent ODI appearance—the very performance that Manjrekar highlighted to expose the flaws in the selectors’ latest squad announcement.

As the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan approaches, the pressure will be on the veteran players to justify their selection, while young talents like Jaiswal and Sudharsan wait in the wings, deserving of a much clearer pathway to the national side.
